Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as just a young girl. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the time she needed during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art and theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay discovered by watching her mother's example how art could serve as an instrument for activism. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay was born in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. Her father recalled the civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay toured Selma in the summer and was inspired to create a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. After graduation she was enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at college. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of one member of the jury as well as look through their trash. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR her agency launched a number of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful. Her name is associated with a well-known actress that has been in American Experience (1987), A More Perfect Union (2009), and other films. Autumn played the character of Rose of A More Perfect Union and Anna Payne of American Experience.
